A Call for Urgent Action on AI Safety and Accountability

One week after the election, Congress will reconvene and will likely take action on a number of unfinished – or unwanted – items. Let’s make sure Artificial Intelligence is on the agenda.

Friend, One week after the election, Congress will reconvene and will likely take action on a number of unfinished – or unwanted – items. Let’s make sure Artificial Intelligence is on the agenda. While alarms about human extinction have been overtaken by the impending elections, Congress had finally expressed interest in holding public hearings and drafting various pieces of legislation. But memories on Capitol Hill are short, so the pressure has to keep coming. That’s why we're asking you to write to your U.S. Representative and your two U.S. Senators and tell them the AI race needs a pause, and the public-interest—the common good, not private profit—needs to be protected. Tell them that the build-out of AI-induced, potentially extinction-level technologies cannot be left to a handful of billionaires playing God with the future of humanity. Tell them you expect them to establish advanced technical safeguards, including requiring companies to retrain models to delete dangerous nuclear and biological knowledge, keeping agents off open networks, and installing kill switches. Tell them Congress needs to enact a moratorium on new data centers, ban “superintelligence” models, and mandate third-party independent evaluators be embedded in all the tech companies. It is also important to expand the discussion. Tell them that Congress cannot continue to disregard the human cost of an unregulated AI. Congress must not focus solely on existential threats while ignoring the very present crises facing our workforce, our health care, our privacy, the natural resources of our local communities and the risk of cyber-attacks to our financial, transportation and medical systems. If Congress fails to act, the unregulated expansion of AI will result in the loss of millions of jobs. Because our economic system relies heavily on employment-based insurance coverage, these job losses will directly cause a catastrophic loss of healthcare coverage for millions of families. And because Social Security and Medicare are funded by payroll tax, the security of our seniors is in jeopardy. Artificial Intelligence is the most powerful, transformative technology in human history. While it offers immense potential to accelerate economic growth and uncover medical and scientific breakthroughs, it presents unprecedented economic, environmental, technological, and existential risks. So far, Congress has done nothing to prepare for or mitigate these and many more impacts on our lives, our livelihoods and our communities. Let them know that is unacceptable. The federal minimum wage is a poverty wage

We are asking you to send a letter to your members of Congress today

Friend, The federal minimum wage of $7.25 has not been raised since July 24, 2009. Adjusted for inflation, its value has fallen by more than 31% since then, making it the lowest it has been, in real terms, since 1956.1 If the minimum wage had been adjusted to track for increases in productivity since 1968, it would be over $25 an hour today.2 No raise in seventeen years is the longest stretch in American history – leaving full-time workers in poverty. Please join The Sanders Institute in supporting efforts to raise the minimum wage by sending a message to your Members of Congress. One effort, Senator Bernie Sanders’ and Rep. Bobby Scott’s Raise the Wage Act, is cosponsored by more than a third of the Senate and the House, would raise the federal minimum wage to $17 an hour over the next five years. Additionally, it would phase out anti-worker policies like the tipped subminimum wage of $2.13, the youth sub-minimum wage, and the sub-minimum wage for workers with disabilities. The nonpartisan Economic Policy Institute estimates this bill would deliver a raise to more than 22 million workers by 2030.3 And there are other pieces of legislation to raise the minimum wage, including The Living Wage For All Act,4 The Original Living American Wage Act,5 and The Higher Wages for American Workers Act.6 But the corporations that want to keep wages low know that the public is demanding reform. That is why the National Restaurant Association, the lobbying group that represents McDonald's, Applebee's, and the rest of the fast-food industry, has spent over $50 million total federal lobbying since the last successful vote to raise the minimum wage.7 8 The good news is that this fight is being won in state after state, often in places the political elite tell us it is impossible.9 When the American people get a chance to vote on this directly, they vote to raise wages. Red states, blue states, and purple states, every time. When given the choice, Americans do not want their neighbors to work full-time and still live in poverty. In 2024, voters in Alaska passed Ballot Measure 1, raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2027 and guaranteeing paid sick leave. Roughly 30,000 Alaska workers will get a raise because of that vote. Also in 2024, voters in Missouri passed Proposition A to raise the minimum wage to $15 and require earned paid sick leave. Estimates say this will raise wages for more than 560,000 Missouri workers and provide paid sick leave to nearly 730,000. When the Republican controlled legislature tried to overturn the will of the voters, the Missouri Supreme Court stepped in and upheld the law. In 2022, voters in Nebraska raised their minimum wage to $15. In 2020, voters in Florida did the same. All in, thirty states, represented by 60 Senators, have now raised their own minimum wages above the federal floor.10 And the economic evidence clearly demonstrates that raising the minimum wage is good for workers AND it is good for local businesses and local economies. When a low-wage worker gets a raise, they do not put the money in an offshore bank account. They spend it. They buy groceries. They fill the car with gas. They take their kid to the dentist. They pay the rent. And they spend it locally, at the diner on the corner, their neighborhood barber shop, the family-owned hardware store. Economists call this the local multiplier effect and the research is clear: when working people get paid more, those dollars recirculate through the local economy two, three, four times over. Every raise is somebody else's new customer. Every dollar paid to a worker is a dollar that flows through a community and lifts up the small businesses that anchor it.11 When we raise the minimum wage, we do more than just lift workers out of poverty. We build stronger local economies. We help small businesses. We grow the middle class. The whole community rises. So this is not a question of whether we can afford to raise the minimum wage. The country is more productive than it has ever been. The question is whether we have the political courage to insist that the people who do the work share in the wealth they create. The truth is that Congress will not raise the minimum wage on its own. The lobbying is too powerful. The billionaires and corporate campaign contributions are too large. But by coming together, collectively raising our voices and asserting our civic power, we can accomplish anything. That is why we are asking you to send a letter to your members of Congress today. It is the fight for a country where work is respected, where a job lifts you out of poverty rather than keeping you in it, and where the wealthiest nation in the history of the world pays its workers enough to live with dignity. Here's our rundown of the candidates and issues we're tracking as New Yorkers prepare to cast their ballots. ★ ★ ★ U.S. CONGRESS Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — U.S. House, District 14 A member of Congress and nationally recognized progressive leader, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has championed the Green New Deal, Medicare for All, stronger labor protections, affordable housing, and reforms to campaign finance. ★ ★ ★ Brad Lander — U.S. House, District 10 A longtime New York City progressive leader and former City Comptroller, Brad Lander has focused his public service on housing affordability, government accountability, climate policy, and workers' rights. His congressional campaign builds on that record, emphasizing economic security and public investment. ★ ★ ★ Darializa Avila Chevalier — U.S. House, District 13 A community organizer and democratic socialist, Darializa Avila Chevalier is running for Congress with an emphasis on housing justice, immigrant rights, economic inequality, and reducing corporate influence in politics. ★ ★ ★ Claire Valdez — U.S. House, District 7 A labor organizer and democratic socialist, Claire Valdez has been active in organizing workers and advocating for stronger unions. Her congressional campaign focuses on housing affordability, universal healthcare, workers' rights, and economic justice. ★ ★ ★ NEW YORK STATE SENATE Jon Rivera — State Senate District 61 Jon Rivera is running for State Senate in District 61. His campaign is among the New York legislative contests being tracked in the 2026 general election. ★ ★ ★ Aber Kawas — State Senate District 12 Aber Kawas is a community organizer and progressive candidate for State Senate District 12 whose work has focused on immigrant communities, economic justice, and grassroots political organizing. ★ ★ ★ NEW YORK STATE ASSEMBLY Samantha Kattan — Assembly District 37 A working parent, longtime tenant organizer, daughter of Mexican and Syrian immigrants, and democratic socialist, Samantha Kattan is running to represent communities across western Queens. Her platform includes social housing, stronger tenant protections, universal healthcare, free childcare, immigrant rights, and greener neighborhoods. David Orkin — Assembly District 38 An immigrant workers' rights attorney, union organizer, and democratic socialist, David Orkin has spent his career representing workers and immigrants. His campaign calls for taxing the wealthy to fund childcare, housing, transit, and healthcare, stronger labor protections, and defending immigrant communities from ICE. He rejects corporate lobbyist, fossil fuel, and real estate contributions. Christian Celeste Tate — Assembly District 54 A community organizer and democratic socialist running to represent Bushwick and parts of East New York, Christian Celeste Tate centers housing stability and community well-being in her campaign. Her priorities include preventing displacement, protecting tenants, expanding access to healthcare, and strengthening neighborhood safety. Her campaign rejects corporate, fossil fuel, and real estate money. Eon Huntley — Assembly District 56 A Brooklyn organizer, Eon Huntley is running on a "People Over Profit" platform emphasizing grassroots organizing, coalition-building, and housing justice. His campaign rejects corporate and real estate contributions and highlights direct community involvement in policymaking. Illapa Sairitupac — Assembly District 65 A tenant organizer and anti-ICE activist, Illapa Sairitupac is campaigning in Lower Manhattan with a focus on the working-class and immigrant communities of Chinatown and the Lower East Side. His platform centers on housing affordability, renter protections, immigrant rights, and preventing displacement. David Siffert — Assembly District 66 An NYU School of Law professor and former private-practice attorney, David Siffert has worked on civil justice reform and expanding access to legal services. Their campaign focuses on affordable housing, immigrant rights, and artificial intelligence regulation. Siffert is seeking to become New York's first nonbinary state legislator. Eli Northrup — Assembly District 69 A public defender and former policy director at The Bronx Defenders, Eli Northrup has worked on criminal justice reform, due process protections, and expanding opportunities for people with criminal records. Running as the Democratic and Working Families Party nominee, his campaign emphasizes universal childcare, universal healthcare, affordable housing, stronger tenant protections, and progressive taxation. Maurice "Mo" Brown — Assembly District 129 A veteran, homeowner, and Onondaga County Legislator, Maurice Brown brings local government experience to his Assembly campaign in Central New York. His priorities include lowering utility bills, expanding affordable housing, improving public transportation, investing in prevention-focused public safety, and changing tax policy for corporations and high-income households. Kurtis VanWuyckhuyse — Assembly District 134 A Rochester-area resident and general manager of a family-owned auto business, Kurtis VanWuyckhuyse draws on his experience as a longtime renter in his campaign. Running on a "People Over Profit" platform, he supports living wages, stronger unions, housing stability, the New York Health Act, and greater investment in mental health and addiction treatment. Patrick Burke — Assembly District 142 A South Buffalo native, former Erie County legislator, and incumbent State Assembly member, Patrick Burke is seeking reelection. His public service has emphasized Western New York communities, environmental protections, and constituent services, with a focus on the region's long-term well-being. Adam Bojak — Assembly District 149 A Family Court and housing-rights attorney, Adam Bojak has spent nearly a decade representing Western New Yorkers.
